Platform Operations Engineer II
About the Job/Team:
This is an opportunity to work on a large scale, global network operations department. Working directly with the Global Performance and Operations teams along with the company’s top developers to deploy and support a globally distributed network/platform. Platform Operations Tier 3 team is a small, efficient, knowledgeable group of senior network operations professionals. The team is generally working on troubleshooting the most complex and urgent operational work, such as:
● Tasks that require a higher level of responsibly or permissions.
● Understanding and troubleshooting issues that require a deeper knowledge of different Akamai systems
● Act as Technical Incident Managers as well as Subject Matter Experts as appropriate
● Being a Platform Operations knowledge resource for Global Performance and
Operations, as well as other departments
● This is a shift position that may include hours 19:00-03:00 UTC
Responsibilities:
● Troubleshoot and diagnose problems identified by network monitoring
● Improve existing monitoring practices and tools
● Learn large, complex systems/networks
● Act as a representative for Operations to present and explain network problems,
processes, and workflows
● React in a timely manner for all escalations
● Handle urgent escalation scenarios with a calm/rational demeanor
● Assist with live network broadcasting monitoring in order to quickly troubleshoot and resolve any issues during events
● Work with various third parties (Engineers, System Architects, Infrastructure Vendors, and Developers) to narrow down problems and achieve resolution.
● Clearly and effectively document information in tickets and perform necessary follow-up work to workflows and procedures for communication to other staff
Qualifications:
● Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent experience
● 6+ years of experience in operations or system administration
● Strong written and verbal communication
● Able to work independently
● Advanced skills in working with Unix/Linux systems
● Strong understanding of networking concepts (TCP/IP, UDP, etc.)
● Ability to build and maintain SQL scripts and complex queries for data analysis and extraction
● Fluent in one or more scripting languages (Python, Perl, shell)
● In-depth knowledge of internet protocols such as DNS, HTTP, and SSL
● Experience with the operational support of Internet-scale systems
● Proven ability to combine technical knowledge, logic, and analysis to effectively solve
problems in a large complex production environment
● Effectively communicate and collaborate with remote teams
● Self-motivated with a consistent drive towards results
● Project management experience.
